ASB Official Member Organization:

Spelling Bee Botswana

Spelling Bee Botswana is an organization that facilitates competitions where contestants, usually children, are required to spell certain words correctly after hearing the pronunciation of the word. The concept is originally American and has been adapted to meet the Botswana market.

The organization was founded in 2012. It is a youth founded and run organization with the aim of aiding students to get a better grasp of the English language in order for them to articulate themselves and their thoughts as best possible.

The founder of the organization, Tshepang Thibedi is a young, active and vibrant young woman with the desire to make a significant change by aiding the Ministry of Education and Skills Development in developing students to the level when they will be able to compete academically on an international level.

Initially, when the organization was founded and it had its first competition in 2012, it managed to cover one region in Botswana. Now the organization has grown and developed beyond what the founder had initially predicted. In 2015, Spelling Bee Botswana covered a range of 8 of 10 regions in Botswana and had a participation of roughly 3870 secondary students.

The NSB Impact Story

The Nigeria Spelling Bee has made significant educational impact across Nigeria, reaching more than 20,000 student spellers annually and engaging thousands of schools from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Over the years, the competition has become a major literacy movement, helping students improve vocabulary development, reading culture, confidence, and public speaking skills. The competition has successfully expanded into virtually every region of Nigeria, including states affected by severe insecurity challenges such as Borno and Yobe States, ensuring that students from all backgrounds and regions have equal opportunities to participate.

At the continental level, Nigeria has emerged as one of the strongest spelling bee nations in Africa. In just eight African Spelling Bee Championships (as at 2026), Nigerian representatives produced through the Nigeria Spelling Bee have collectively won 22 continental trophies and counting, including:

  • 4 African Spelling Bee Senior Championship titles
  • 5 African Spelling Bee Junior Championship titles
  • 5 Senior Runner-up titles
  • 3 Junior Runner-up titles
  • 3 Best Country Team Championship titles
  • 2 Best Country Team Runner-up finishes

These achievements have positioned Nigeria as one of the leading spelling nations on the African continent.

Many Nigerian champions have gone on to become role models within their schools and communities, inspiring younger students to pursue academic excellence and literacy development. Several former participants have also continued to excel in leadership, public speaking, writing, and other academic pursuits beyond the spelling bee platform.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee has also contributed significantly to educational inclusion by ensuring that students from public schools, rural communities, and underserved regions are actively involved in the competition alongside students from private schools as well as home-schooled or private candidates

Understanding Nigeria Spelling Bee

How NSB Runs

The Nigeria Spelling Bee is designed as an inclusive national academic competition open to students across Nigeria.

Participation is open to:

  • Students from private schools
  • Students from public schools
  • Independent/private candidates not registered under any school

The competition begins at the State Level Competitions, conducted across participating states in Nigeria. Students compete within their states to emerge as State Champions and National Finalists.

Outstanding spellers from the various states then advance to the National Finals, where the best student spellers in Nigeria compete for prestigious national titles and scholarship prizes.

The National Finals prize pool currently exceeds ₦5 million in scholarships, educational support, trophies, medals, and other prizes. Winners also earn the opportunity to represent Nigeria at international competitions such as the African Spelling Bee Championship.

In addition to oral spelling rounds, the competition often incorporates:

  • Essay writing contests
  • Vocabulary and literacy development activities
  • Public speaking exposure
  • Leadership and networking opportunities

The Nigeria Spelling Bee places strong emphasis not only on spelling accuracy, but also on confidence building, critical thinking, discipline, and communication skills.
